hihihi. :)

MICU is fun... so far. :)

oh weeeeeeee there's some internet that my laptop can detect here in our place! but the signal is too low if i move an inch it's gone.

i finally started what i was really supposed to do here-- my elective. i'm taking up uro-oncology, but today, i learned that i pretty much can do whatever i want to do and choose wherever i want to go-- OR or clinics. i went to the OR today. :)

the first procedure that i was able to observe was a robotic prostatectomy! they don't do open prostatectomy here anymore... the surgeon didn't even have to scrub in because the robot does all the dirty work! and no big abdominal incisions... just 4 small holes on the abdomen where the robot's arms equipped with the video and light source and the various surgical instruments. and oh, the video is displayed on a very big flat screen TV and two other TVs for the assisting surgeon and nurse. ang yaman nila!!!!

the second procedure i watched was the nephrectomy. nag-harvest ng kidney from a lady which was to be transplanted to her dad. cooool! and i was the one who put the foley cath. :) they had this foley cath kit which contained everything, including the tweezers and cotton that you can use.

super ideal ng health care system dito... they have access to the best advancements in medicine, and yeah, complete instruments and supplies. they have this "shelf" full of different kinds of sutures in EVERY OR, a table full of different kinds of clamps, scissors and everything imaginable. and they are very meticulous about counting all the instruments and stuff that they use in every operation. they count and tabulate THRICE. they even have this organizer where they can put all then bloodied/used OS (gauze) so that they can assure nothing's left inside the body.

as in sobrang amazed talaga ako kanina the chief resident (my teacher) must think we do things in the philippines in a barbaric manner... (which, come to think of it, is actually kind of true!).

even the resident's callroom (which they call the "team room") is amazing. the door locks itself when you go out, and you have to punch in the code on the doors for you to get in. the room has 3 functional computers, connected to the internet and intranet, plus wifi and printers!

their patient record system is also jaw dropping! everything is computerized, ALL the patient's records are stored in their system and you can pretty much access everything that happened to the patient. even the MRI/CT/Xray/all imaging procedures can be accessed and zoomed! even the orders are given out through the internet and you can also see if it was done or suspended by the resident. amazing!!!!

so tomorrow, sa clinic naman ako. i'm sure mamamangha na naman ako!

i'm the only girl in the department. all the residents and the attending physicians are males! all their scrubs are LARGE kasi puro lalaki sila, but i have to make do with it.

i hope i don't get bored in my elective... there's still a month to go!

PS. we walk like more than 10 blocks everyday. lakad ang theme dito sa NY! hehe. can't wait to upload my pictures!!!

Arrived at New York 4 days ago (Friday). wasn't that cold when I got here. Gabi na so we just proceeded to our rented place-- Ok yung place,  we each have our own beds. Alvin's bed reminds me of Ge because he has the same sheets! Haha. Yun nga lang, walang internet..The best thing though about our place is that we have our own TV. yahoo!! Gossip Girl resumes tonight at 8PM!!!

The next day (SaturdaY), bought my metrocard (subway) for $81 good for a month. Met up with Sandee in Manhattan, tried to remember all the transfers and trains I should take (sana di makalimutan). Went back to Queens and ate breakfast at a pinoy restaurant operated by our foster dad. Hehe. Then we're off to Tanger Mall--the shopping heaven of New York!!!! Super discounted items in the outlet stores. There's bath and body works, anne taylor, coach, the dressbarn, nine west, liz clairborne, esprit, aldo, gap, etc etc etc!!!! Went crazy at aldo and bought two shoes and 1 bag, all for $46! Isn't that greaaat? I also bought some pasalubongs for my brother and batchmates. And yeah, i bought a dress for our anniversary. :D

Sandee slept over because we finished dinner late. Had dinner with our foster family, we ate too much red meat (steaks) and drank heineken! Haha. after eating nag-SGD kami with ronnie's tito. yeah, SGD. like we were asked kung anong specialty gusto namin, we talked about healthcare in the Philippines, here in the US, malpractice issues, etc. SGD eto!

The next day (Sunday) was spent around Central Park. Took lots of pictures, bought some souvenirs. Lakad lang kami ng lakad ni Alvin Chu while waiting for Sandee. We must've walked like 10 blocks or more!! Super cold yesterday, i was "forced" tuloy to buy a thicker jacket at Zara. Discounted, i love it!!!!!

And today (Monday), we're officially starting our elective. We're here at the Mount Sinai Library, reading these modules on their health privacy laws, issues, etc and answering required quizzes. The hospital looks like a museum!!

For all you US people, here's my cell no. It's AT&T. +19174995961. Call meeee!!

my forehead and back skin is peeling off no matter how i mega-moisturize!!!!!!

i just finished shopping for my elective clothes and the stuff that i need. did it in two hours!! :D kaya lang mukhang i have to buy new luggage because all my stuff won't fit in my old pink maleta.

Recipe for moist muffins! I added chocolate chips for a yummier (and more fattening!) version. I added Nestle Fitnesse and Fruit cereals as toppings for the first batch i cooked (photo). The next one didn't have any toppings. The batch with toppings was more mabenta!

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups mashed overripe bananas
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup semi-sweet choco chips optional)
  • cerals for topping (optional. you may use the fruit and nut version--goes well with the banana bread!)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease (or put muffin cups) the muffin tray.

Sift the flour, salt and baking soda into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together the butter or margarine and sugar until smooth. Stir in the bananas, eggs, and chocolate chips until well blended. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, and stir just until blended. Do not overmix!!! The muffins won't be moist if overmixed. Put one scoop (use ice cream scoop) into each muffin mold. Top with the fruit and nut cereals.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven. Let the muffins cool in the tray for at least 5 minutes, then turn out onto a cooling rack, and cool completely. Wrap in aluminum foil to keep in the moisture.

i love shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but really.

i am so so so so so in love with them. heeheehee. there's a very very happy and light feeling deep inside me whenever i buy a pair. :)

baliw. :D :D :D

i spent my whole afternoon arranging the piles and piles of paper aka transes that i've accumulated since 2nd year. i haven't gotten them bound yet because i was too busy last summer. exaj, 1/4 of my unit was littered with paper while i was organizing my transes!!!! and yep, arranging the transes in the order they were lectured is back breaking work. whew!

na-realize ko lang:

  1. sobrang dami talagang inaral nung 2nd year. the transes completely filled up 8 long expandable envelopes (the very expandable ones ha)!!! that's after throwing away all the useless photocopies,  transes from other classes and bazurrahs.
  2. and in contrast, sobrang benign talaga ng 3rd year! my transes this year haven't even filled 1 expandable envelope yet, and this year's almost done. haha.
  3. we spend so much on photocopying!!!!
  4. i tend to photocopy handouts/books/notes i KNOW i won't even pick-up and read.
wala lang. yung lang yung point ng afternoon ko.

i recently watched atonement, knocked up, and the bucket list and PS i love you. ;) hehe, gets ko na finally what torrents are, and wow, i'm addicted to downloading!!

deep yung atonement, set during one of the world wars. it's depressingly beautiful. but don't watch it after an exam. you'll fall asleep kasi puro salitaan. i liked it though, and i want to read the book!!!

knocked up ako na lang yata hindi nakakapanood. super funny! as in you know the boy bastos joke about not having sex when you're pregnant because the guy's penis might be poking the baby? it's there hahaha! but it isn't some slapstick comedy. hindi sya pointless! chaka!! (eliza, 2008)

the bucket list made me cry. buckets. awww for friendships. and for traveling around the world. now i'm seriously considering taking a year off after the boards and just travel. mejo unrealistic nga lang yun kasi san ako kukuha ng pera?! sabi ko nga kay ge mag moonlighting kami around the philippines muna for one year, after the boards. hahaha. i'll make my own bucket list one of these days.

gerry (as in the hot king in 300! ahoo ahoo!)  is sooooo hot in PS i love you!!! and hilary swank is soooo ma-panga. hehe. i liked it din, mejo naluha ako dun sa videoke scene. at times, funny sya so tawa, sad, tawa, iyak... ganun. and may twist. ;) i'm now reading the book.

aside from the movies, i'm also addicted to playing diner dash 4 and mystery case files (4) madam fate!!! so if you guys see me around puffy eyed, it's not because ge and i had a fight (i hope not) or because i stayed up studying (asa pa)! haha. it's because i'm up until 2-3 am in the morning, facing my laptop, watching and playing!!!!

valentine's next week, i'm excited!

So after the toxicity of TRP, now I'm bored. We're half day almost every day and I'm seriously going nuts because there is nothing else to do!!!! Alam nyo naman med students, pag toxic, nagrereklamo, pag sobrang benign, nagrereklamo pa rin. Hahaha. In 3 days... (in no particular order) I've finished 10 episodes of gossip girl in half a day... I've already gone around the mall and was able to buy a dress!!! (so now i'm very very poor!) I've tried two new restaurants in the Midtown wing... (as in I need to super save na for Valentine's day!) I've gone to Star City, bought the ride all you can ticket and rode only 2 "kiddie" rides! went inside snow world!!! slid down the ice slide, watched ge as he rode the more thrilling rides, wasted 100+ bucks trying to win the big stuffed toys! Watched national treasure with my brother!! Tried my luck at Tom's World and Timezone with my blockmates!! All that and lots of sleep in between. ICC is THE life!!!! PS. Wala bang party jan? Hehehe.
